I often suggest to those I work with as their life coach to reflect upon their lives ten or twenty years ago and make an inquiry. Hopefully,
after you read this, you’ll be asking yourself, Why Not? about many things in your life.
Look at what you’ve been disappointed by. Or maybe it just didn’t work out the way you had hoped. I’m sure some of us have a list that we haven’t quite let go of, which gets in the way of our reaching our full potential. I know that many of us have moved on, and are stronger for the experience.
Now for the next inquiry, which I think is an even more important one. Ask yourself what you have been surprised by—surprised in a good way, a way that has exceeded your expectations of yourself.
A familiar theme to be mindful of, is that from where you are standing at this moment, it is impossible to imagine what is possible when you reach higher ground. Said in another way, when your confidence is at a low ebb, even the littlest of things seem daunting. The corollary is also true. When your confidence is at a high level, you say to yourself, “Why Not? There’s no better time than now. I’m going for it.”
I remember when I first got into backpacking many years ago. We were planning to hike the Napali Coast into the Kalalau Valley on the island of Kauai. First, there was the preparation. We made sure we were in good shape and had the proper supplies. We took the time to read about the hike in various travelers’ guides and were somewhat familiar with its challenges. The day had arrived. We were ready to begin our journey. I remember my hesitation before taking that first step. When I looked ahead, all I could see was the rocky steep terrain on the narrow muddy trail. “Do I really want to do this,” I asked myself, a question that I’ve asked several times about other things that I’ve been involved with.
From where we were at the trailhead, there was no way we could experience all of the beauty and majesty that awaited us. It was only when we were able to get on higher ground that my perspective changed. In the process of getting there, I was able to leave the clutter and negativity behind, and experience the beauty of the moment. Since that first hike, over the years I’ve hiked that trail seven more times. I’m not just stronger physically, but stronger emotionally and mentally. And the feeling that I can do it is stronger than ever.
