The Ultimate Relationship
It seems that in the month of February, with Valentine’s Day getting more attention than other days, there is more focus on relationships. In some ways a relationship inventory. At times I’ve wondered if there is an ultimate relationship. There is no question that relationships stretch you, whether you want to be stretched or not. You experience a myriad of emotions that you would not have experienced without the relationship, ranging from fear, anger, and avoidance to fulfillment, confidence and passion.
You explore uncharted territory discovering new ways of saying and looking at things. You’re never totally prepared for what needs to be done or said, so quite often you avoid saying what’s on your mind. Sooner or later what you withhold from your partner is reflected in your attitudes and conduct, often leading to feelings of separation and alienation, which defeats the purpose of being in relationship.
Sharing your most intimate feeling is not the easiest thing to do because for so long we have been doing things by ourselves and have not had much practice. But when you do, it’s so liberating.
What makes relationships confusing and challenging is that we each bring different models and life experiences to the relationship. We’re often in different stages of our evolutionary cycle. What is important to us changes, as do our feelings and our life’s circumstances.
Each relationship has prepared me for the next. What I’ve come to realize is that the ultimate relationship is with myself. It’s taken me a while to get there, but whether I’m with someone or not, I’m always with myself.
Until you love yourself deeply and passionately, what you have to give to others will be limited.
If you want to have better relationships, then begin with having a better relationship with yourself.
