LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
The phrase Leadership Development has always intrigued me. I have always been on the cutting edge of personal and professional development yet the exact meaning of this phrase eluded me for quite some time. I became motivated to explore what those words meant. With that in mind, I had numerous conversations with others to see if I could achieve clarity as to what makes a great leader. I also had the privilege to work with many individuals who were in Leadership Positions in Private Industry and in Government. My research also benefited from the wisdom and insights gained from reading many great books already written on this vast subject. It is my hope that my exploration and discoveries will give you greater clarity and understanding of the enormous possibility and opportunity of this journey.
Let’s start with the concept of Development. It implies that we are engaged in a dynamic process of expansion and evolution. As we commit to this process our personal power, creativity and intelligence also expands. We find we have more energy, are better able to innovate and better able to think outside the box. On some level, we are always developing and expanding what is possible in our lives. When we apply the concept of development to ourselves, personal development, we realize there is more to learn about ourselves and how we function in the world. It is really an exploration, a journey, full of opportunities to be enjoyed, rather than a destination.
When we add Leadership to the mix, even though we are still in the ongoing expansion phase, we start to define our purpose; what we are all about and what our vision is for our careers, our communities, the world, and ourselves. At some level, we want to expand our ability to create impact in all of the environments that we are part of, no matter what they are. This desire to create impact, to make a difference, involves an examination of our life to this point and an expansion of our notion of what we think is possible.
The inner journey of knowing ourselves helps connect us to the source of our personal power. However, we will not be fully connected to this power until we examine what our values and priorities are and live our life in accordance with these values and priorities. Once this occurs, we experience a heightened sense of living a life full of integrity and meaning. The commitment to this process is challenging and full of obstacles, but once you do commit you find a renewed sense of what your mission is and what it is to live a passionate life. With this renewed commitment and vigor, you are able to create real success and fulfillment on all levels for yourself and others.
Many people are born leaders, yet the ability to lead is actually an art and an amazing collection of skills that can be learned and sharpened through a series of daily habits and activities.
