Let it Shine

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Whenever I give a talk I like to get feedback. There is alway a small number of people who come up to me afterwards and tell me they were inspired. That is revealing…not so much about my talk but about what they really want. They want to be inspired in their life. It’s something that they long for and are open to. We all want to be inspired and excited about our lives. Sometimes we resist it. Our work is to allow it to happen. And guess what? Along the way you inspire other people. In the process you become inspired even more.

Many of us have experienced that cycle at times in our life. Life seems to support us. We’re excited. But it doesn’t always last and the challenges come back. We are reminded that we still have work to do. We learn to accept the challenges because we know on the other side we’ll be stronger and more committed.

We’ve learned that it’s the discipline that keeps us going. We all have those days when we just don’t feel like doing it especially when we don’t see the immediate value in what we’re doing. But the discipline gives us the focus necessary to experience life on a deeper level. In case your wondering, I’m talking about your morning program, especially the meditation.

And the paradox is that as we expand our ability to focus and to go deeper, we see how interconnected all of life is. When we think about the relationship between the bee and the flower we see how that synergy results in honey. We can experience our life in that way. It’s only when we allow ourselves to experience the deeper levels that we see the nectar of life——we are one.

We are reminded to smile. Be willing to share your smile. A smile goes a long way especially when it’s an inner smile. We take that inner joy into the world and joy is reflected back to us. We become a mirror for more joy in our life. There’s that synergy again.

You are the way. Life is a mirror of your inner state. Let it shine.

What you Bring to the Table

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

You get the invitation. Your friend invited you to a small gathering. You want to know if you should bring something. And he or she says to just bring yourself. You wonder if it’s enough and so you go out and get a bottle of wine. Sound familiar.

Wherever you go or wherever you are, you’re always bringing yourself. You’re the gift. With that comes a big responsibility to be yourself. Your uniqueness, like a snowflake, is what makes life interesting and fascinating.

It’s your curiosity——your openness that makes you who you are. What used to seem boring to you no longer seems that way. You notice subtleties that you didn’t see before. You learn from each and every experience and from each and every person you meet. You’re able to see the best in people.

You see the beauty in the most ordinary things. You feel blessed for having been there. You’re excited about the next thing, the next opportunity. Yes, you cup is brimming over. You smile and empower everyone in your sphere. They feel blessed and enriched that they have connected with you.

You’ve made the choice to see the richness and goodness in life. Of course, there are many circumstances that are not so pleasant. You don’t ignore them, but you don’t dwell on them. You come to the present moment. You keep smiling.

You’re grateful for each day. Each day seems like a miracle. Oh, yes you are so blessed. You get to make that choice over and over again. You choose happiness. So that’s what you bring to the table.

ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Perhaps you’ve heard the expression,”they have no skin in the game.” Maybe you’ve even said it yourself. That’s been our good friend Carl’s, one of my life coaching clients, challenge for many years. He holds back and eventually walks away. He rationalizes to himself that it doesn’t matter and that he doesn’t care. It’s safe that way. He won’t be disappointed. Because this is his mindset, it’s not surprising that the easiest excuses knock him off course. Carl has never really committed himself to anything.

Think about your life. What are the reasons you keep telling yourself that are preventing you from having the life you’ve secretly desired? If those excuses and reasons are running your life it’s a good sign that you don’t have much “skin in the game.” For whatever reason, you’re not committed.

It’s also a sign that you are an observer of life rather than a participant. Another way of saying it is that you are sitting on the river’s edge watching the river of life flow by without you.

Accept the challenge to look at the source of your resistance. Accept that you have resistance and do it anyway. Jump in the river of life, you’re going to get wet anyway. That’s the nature of rivers. Declare yourself. Let people know what your secret desire is. Put it out there.

It matters. It matters because you’ll be more determined than you ever have before. You’ll be inspired You’ll inspire others to live more fully. It’s time to be fully committed to life. You make a difference by you being the authentic you.

Open Up to the Essential You

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

It’s like comparing apples with oranges, Carl said to me in a life coaching session. Is one better than the other? That’s what happens when we compare one scenario with another. Or if we compare ourselves to others or to ourselves many years ago. We’ll usually be disappointed.

So we need to change the focus. Within that apple there is something special and within that orange there is some special juice. We all want to know what we can do to connect with that juice inside ourselves. How do we connect with our inner unique essence?

When you look at the skin of the orange on the surface you can only imagine what’s inside it. It’s only when you squeeze it that you experience the real juice that nurtures you. For you that real juice is that peaceful place within that you have access to.

When you access it, your whole perception of life is transformed. You see the beauty and feel the goodness and richness of life. You’re able to tune into your love vibration. You become it——that vibration that can guide and inspire you toward expressing who you are more fully.

When this happens you open up to possibilities never before experienced. And as you continue to express yourself in this way, no matter where you are, life seems to flow effortlessly.

Your essential essence reveals itself. When it’s the right time the caterpillar becomes the butterfly. So will you. When it’s the right time you will transform into that essential you. Your purpose will then be revealed to you.

Your uniqueness is a gift to the world.

WATCH IT BLOSSOM

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

When I asked Sally in a life coaching session what gave her joy, she hesitated before answering. Then she went on to talk about some of her favorite things she enjoyed doing.

Like many of us, Sally found enjoyment in activities that were fun for her. It’s great when you are engaged in those activities many of which require money and time, but what about the rest of the time.

It’s kind of like looking into the future, thinking that when you get there (the future) everything will be ok. When I find a good job real life can begin. We need to shift our paradigm. The future is not some place we are going to, but a state of mind in which we are creating moment to moment. In the process we learn to truly enjoy where we are right now. We see the joy in the present moment exactly the way things are. We make the decision to experience the joy fully even with its imperfections.

Joy is not a predetermined set of circumstances or conditions or a static feeling, but a choice which is dynamic and ever changing. Letting the circumstances or your condition prevent you from being truly happy is another choice. This choice weighs you down and eventually becomes a habit that is difficult to change.

I get to play with my name. On a recent radio show, the host had difficulty in pronouncing the last part of my last name. Finally I said, “It’s pronounced now, not later.” Make a decision to enjoy life now. Now is the only time. It’s doesn’t take anything else. This moment is complete in itself. There’s nothing to do but to choose. Your life is the way it is! Enjoy it now and watch it blossom.

BE THE BEST YOU, YOU CAN BE

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

In our life coaching yesterday, our good friend Carl shared his need to prove himself to his dad even though his dad had passed on twenty years ago. What a tough challenge. His dad was quite a guy. The way Carl talked about him I probably would have felt the same way he did….”I’m not good enough.”

I let Carl know that he didn’t need to prove anything to anyone. There are no judges out there, I let him know. But Carl, like many of us, discovered a new and harsher judge, himself.

Carl continued to hold on to the negative habits and thought patterns that he adopted in childhood. The fear, the anger, resentment and other negative emotions have continued to get in the way of his becoming his authentic self.

Carl has been living his life with a handicap as if he had one hand tied behind his back. It’s quite a burden.

It was quite a revelation when Carl traced his negative habits and patterns to his relationship with his dad. It became obvious that he was doing the same thing to himself that he learned from his dad.

I suggested that he learn to become his own best friend. Instead of berating and belittling himself, I suggested that he praise himself.

Like so many things in our life it begins in the morning. How you start your day sets the tone for the day. You can develop that other voice, your voice of inspiration and praise, that inspires and empowers you and tells you that yes you can. It tells you that it’s going to be all right. It lets you know that you are loved.

In the morning take a moment after your meditation to praise yourself, to remind yourself how special you are and how much you make a difference by your being the best you, you can be.

Let your Vision Pull you

Monday, October 24th, 2011

How you start your day sets the tone for the day. After meditating I encourage people to focus on what they are grateful for. Focusing on what you are grateful for shifts how you think about your life, from what isn’t working to what is working.

And we know from doing the work that what we focus on expands. When we focus on our blessings and the joys in our life with the same intensity and passion that we had for the imperfections, our life miraculously becomes an exciting journey of discovery. Instead of thinking about the reasons and excuses you can’t have that life, think passionately about the life you can have.

Let your vision pull you in the direction of your deepest longing. Feel it, see it and see yourself being pulled toward what you love rather than wasting energy trying to avoid what you fear.

Focus on the possibilities, rather than the obstacles. Now is the time to become the person you have always wanted to be.

Live that life that you think about and sometimes feel is just outside your grasp. Now is the time, not later, to be that person and to live that life.

There will always be a few clues and signs that will guide you on your path. You might not notice them at first. Pay attention. They let you know you are on the right path. They become the foundation for your living the life you’ve always wanted.

There is an authentic you that wants to express itself through you. Use each day as an opportunity for that essential you to fully express itself more fully. Each person you meet is an instrument for you to be more fully you.

Choose to live authentically. Choose to live life fully. Choose happiness.

WHAT IS SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT?

Friday, October 21st, 2011

When I first began coaching, I attempted to put into words the benefits of what I do. I continue to find that this is a challenge. For a while I would say that our work together enables one to experience more success and fulfillment in their life. I still like that description especially when we start to look at what success and fulfillment means. I think of this words as mirrors of each other.

We can think of fulfillment as experiencing life’s richness. It’s an inner state that doesn’t depend on acquiring anything outside of ourself. When we are in that state we are truly successful.

It’s an inner joy that we are blessed to share with all of those we come in contact with. When we are in that state we have been able to transcend the conditions or circumstances that have been weighing on our minds preventing us from tuning into our higher presence.

We bring that state of inner joy with us wherever we are and wherever we go. It’s our gift to humanity. We have done the inner work to get there. When we are in that state, we truly make a difference in the world.

Think about your life for a moment. Reflect upon those moments in which you gave most generously of your self. You felt fulfilled. You felt privileged to have experienced one of life’s most sacred moments.

All of the joys, challenges, and even the pains, have contributed to you being you in that moment. That’s your gift. That’s real success and fulfillment.

WITH NEW DETERMINATION

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

As I awoke this morning I thought about blogging first thing before I got into the day. With that intention I knew it would get done and you feel so good when you finish.

When I was working on my book, Dancing on the River: Navigating Life’s Changes, after my morning meditation, I would write before I did anything else. It was amazing how much I accomplished. I had so
much clarity, purpose and determination. The rest of my day could wait——it would always be there. For that matter so would the rest of the world. If we don’t have that determination we won’t get as much done. And whatever we do get done takes a lot longer to complete.

On this day, in this moment, whatever you choose to do, do it with new determination so that you can make meaningful progress on your journey.

Yes it takes time and effort but when you are determined, you won’t even notice it. Sometimes you’ll feel like you are on a mission and before you know it, you are well on your way to creating something of lasting value way beyond the effort that went into it. It says something about you; about your commitment to moving forward in your life. That’s the way it felt with my book. It took a lot of effort but it felt so good to have completed the project——something that I’ll always be proud of.

And yes I plan to write another one, yet I don’t know what the exact subject of it will be. I’m just about ready for the challenge, the frustration and the breakthrough. Ah that frustration, and there always is and will be, can stop you every time if you let it.

With new determination I take the next step forward. It won’t be perfect at first but it’s a necessary step in moving forward on the path. So often we hesitate because we are looking for the perfect thing to do. But that perfection we are looking forward is based upon what we know up to now. Because of that we’ll come up with excuses why it won’t work. I still manage to always find a few things, but I persist and take the next step toward creating my new paradigm. It’s been an exciting adventure.

A few years from now when you look back you’ll be so thankful that you took that step forward toward creating the new determined “you.”

Flipping how you see the world.

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

In a life coaching session recently our friend Carl reported that he was feeling kind of down. When I asked him what was going on he reported that everywhere he turned there was bad news. “The world’s a
mess” he said. “I don’ see a way out.”

Carl is not alone and is right in one way. There is a lot of negativity out there, some of which is worthy of our attention. But most of it is not, especially if it leads us away from what is possible in our life and gives us joy.

Keep reminding yourself as to what you want to create in your life. Keep reminding yourself of that person you want to be. Think about having a passion for living and being excited about your life.

I’m not suggesting ignoring the negative factors but don’t dwell on them.
On a daily basis, shift your focus to the positive by focusing on what you are grateful for. You can always find something wrong; it takes more effort to focus on what’s right and what’s working. Eventually thinking about what is possible becomes a habit.

Thinking in this way is triggered by what at first seems like a problem. Now you’re able to flip it so that you see opportunities and possibilities that at one time in your life didn’t exist.

Keep growing. Keep evolving and choose happiness.
