TAP INTO THE PASSION WITHIN
Tuesday, July 12th, 2011I have been a life coach for over ten years now and published my first book, Dancing on the River: Navigating Life’s Changes last summer. It feels great. I gave up a secure career as a trial attorney (it had been my life for 30 years) to enter the world of the unknown.
It’s been an exciting adventure, although at times especially in the beginning, I’ve questioned whether I made the right decision. I don’t question it anymore. I am way beyond that. Yes there are those bumps on the road because I have new concerns but there would have been other bumps if I stayed the course. Life gets stale and one day you wake up and realize that you are just going through the motions. That’s the way it was for me even though in many ways I had a good life.
Many, who I have been privileged to work with, as their life coach, don’t see a way out in the beginning of our relationship so they do nothing and continue on the road they have been on.
After a while they find direction and a new sense of purpose. Most of them continue in the same career they have been on but with a new passion and excitement. They realize that they are more than their career and learn how to redefine who they are. They realize that they won’t find the passion, they are looking for, outside of themselves.
That passion is an inward journey that goes with you wherever you are. When you tap into that passion, life become fulfilling no matter what you are doing. There is no question that it helps to have work that gives you meaning and purpose, but if you depend on that for fulfillment you limit what’s possible in your life.
When you feel that passion within you because that’s who you are, then you have a boldness that takes you in new directions never experienced before. You are excited about life and passionate about living. You are bold and willing to explore that part of yourself that comes alive.
As the mystic Joseph Campbell reminds us,
“You enter the forest
at the darkest point;
Where there is no path.
Where there is a way or path,
It is someone else’s path.
If you follow someone else’s way,
You are not going to realize
your potential.
