LAUGHING AND LIGHTENING UP

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Do you have anything special for tonight? How are you going to bring in the new year? I have thought about that for a few days. I still haven’t decided what we are going to do. When we were on Kauai we would get together with a small gathering of friends and as the clock struck twelve, share our hopes and dreams for the new year.

Since we have been back in Marin we haven’t been as purposeful. Last year we got together we our old friends Rick and Nancy and went out to dinner. Since connection is one of my most important values, it was a great way start the year. And this year I feel good about the deepening connection in my life. I used to think that this required effort and reaching out. Yes perhaps it does require taking the initiative in creating and deepening relationships, but taking the initiative doesn’t have to be effort. Instead it can be a natural extension of who you are especially if you like to give to others which i do. It’s my way to give to others.

When I reach out I feel fulfilled and empowered. There are many folks out there who are stuck and are waiting for someone to call them. Maybe that’s you. Don’t wait any longer. Make that call and touch someone. It makes a big difference for both you and the person on the other end. Stay involved and get connected.

As to the new year. Annie suggested we go hear comedy as a way to bring in the new year. I like the idea. What greater way to start the year than with laughing and lightening up. So that’s one of my intentions for the year. More laughter and more play. Of course I also have tangible career goals such as publishing my book and growing my business. I have a feeling that more laughter is going to get me there.

THE SECRET TO THE REAL YOU

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

I’m thinking about passwords today. I have between 10-15 . If I add combinations to locks that I have for bicycles and other things I approach around 20. I don’t want to write them down because then the safety element would be lost. So I memorize them and give myself clues as to the best way to remember them.

And aren’t passwords and combinations replacements for old fashioned keys. They are suppose to be more efficient but instead you have more to keep track of…. what happened to those good ole days when life was less complicated….to those simple days when you didn’t have to hide what’s yours…passwords do let you in and are the key to unlocking secrets .

Wouldn’t it be cool if every one had a password and if we knew what it was that person would instantly be more open, loving and there for us. The ultimate password is the password to the heart. And just like our many other passwords, sometimes we need to look harder to find what it is… But once we find it everything clicks…we’re where we want to be…we’re home.

SOME QUESTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

What are you doing today? Do you feel a little bit lazy after the Christmas holiday?. I do and I’m thinking about the new year. I’m getting into that mood in which I am thinking about what I want to accomplish. But first I’m rejoicing on all that has transpired. I finished writing my book which took a year and a half. Now the next phase is beginning; what to do to get it out there. That is one of my goals for next year. I like having a project because it gives me a focus so I feel productive.

What’s your number one goal for the year coming up? Usually we think about those pounds we want to lose; the same ones we thought about last year, or we might have some financial goals. It might be that ideal relationship. I bet if you think back your goals are very similar to what they were in past years.

So this year; what would have to happen to make this your best year? Who would you have to become? What would you have to do to get there? What would you have to change? What would you have to let go of?

If you like reading this blog, most likely you would enjoy reading my ezine, Letters on Life.

Before we know it the year will be over. How we think about what has happened this year, sets it up for next year. I didn’t achieve all of my goals. I didn’t lose the extra pounds that I wanted to or reach the financial targets that I had in mind. But does it really matter? I am happy and optimistic about next year.

My focus is on what I achieved. I finished my book. My relationships with my family are better than ever. My friendships have deepened. My coaching practice has taken a quantum leap. And I could go on. And even thought I didn’t hit those other goals I came close and I have momentum for the new year. I am grateful for my life and I am focusing on the good stuff.

I look forward to continuing the journey. As your year winds down, focus on the good stuff.

Quite often I ask my coaching clients to acknowledge themselves for three things in their life. For some it’s no big thing but for many others it is. So what about you. What’s #1? What do you really good about this year? And what’s #2 and #3? It’s a good practice to get into. You focus on what’s right rather than what’s wrong. Putting yourself in a different environment helps give you a different perspective.

As to different perspective I invite you to subscribe to my free monthly ezine, Letters on Life.

TOP TEN WAYS TO CREATE CHARISMA

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

I have often wondered how you create charisma in your life… Since charisma is a form of energy, the question is how do you go about creating energy. And then there’s the question of what type of energy.

If you look at charisma as magnetism then charisma can be used in a good or bad way depending on the intention of the person. There are some people that are just plain charismatic no matter what they do. But let’s talk about what we can do to create it in our lives. To me charisma is a matter of creating more presence. So how do you do that?

1.Increase your energy by exercising and breathing fully.
2.Have a discipline like meditation, yoga or Tai Chi that creates prana or chi.
3.Be aware of the phrasing and cadence of your words.
4.Eat lots of fruits and vegetables in that they contain a lot of water which is what our body needs.
5.Be aware of your environment.
6.Notice how you move or dance.
7.Be a little unpredictable.
8.Find something that you are passionate about-which will transfer to other areas of your life.
9.Develop a connection with a higher power.
10.Create a style in the way you dress or groom yourself.

So here it is. If you have some other suggestions, let me know. If you like my blog, take the time to subscribe to my free monthly newsletter, Letters on Life.

Your Life is a Gift

Monday, December 17th, 2007

As the year is coming to a close I take stock of the year in perspective. Yes I have experienced my shares of ups and downs. All in all it’s been a great year. I am smiling, my business is doing great and we are healthy. Of course, there have been disappointments and I have my share of doubt.

Perhaps more than anything I have adopted an attitude of gratitude. For quite some time I realized the value of gratitude. Realizing it intellectually is just the first step. Making it part of you is the next. That happens eventually.

More than anything I realize that no matter what happens to us, there is a gift that perhaps we don’t see at the time. Our whole life is a gift. I recently saw a story about a homeless person that reminded me of this truth. He carried a sign that gathered a lot of attention. It read: “I was once like you, but one day you might be like me, so please help.”

You are blessed for the life you have. There’s much to be grateful for. Keep smiling and as my friend Mike Robbins says “Focus on the Good Stuff.”

OLD FRIENDS

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

This morning at the health food store, I heard a voice saying, “Mark…Mark…is that you?” And I looked up and it was an old friend whom I haven’t seen in years.

We talked as if no time had gone by. When there’s that repoire it’s easy to pick up where you left off. And last week I called my old friend Jim with whom I haven’t seen in 15 years. We were close at one time and then he moved away.

That’s the way it is. We have more close connections than we realize when we look at the big picture. This is the time to reach out and to enjoy the harvest.

Think about all of the close friendships that you have had in your life even if today there is no contact. By doing so it reminds you that you have touched many people in your life and that you can touch many others from this day forward. In this day with everyone being so mobile and changing locations friends do move on. But so do we and that’s why it’s important to keep reaching out.

And there’s no better way to mine the jewels you already have. This is the time of the year when you are supported in doing this. There’s nothing more rewarding than to get the juice from connecting. Reach out and touch someone.

YOU-YOUR BEST FRIEND

Friday, December 14th, 2007

Have you ever looked at being with yourself as an art form? Llke most art forms, if we keep at it, we get better at it. After a while, we become an expression of that art form…For example…if we are a dancer, we move in a certain way and are more comfortable in our bodies. If we are meditators we are more comfortable with silence. And it goes on.

The important thing to note is that as we become more comfortable with ourself the better decisions we make. This is especially so in the area of relationships. When we enjoy our own company we aren’t as needy and are more selective and usually able to avoid unhealthy relationships.

When we enjoy our own company we are more apt to be more adventurous. Sometimes we are reluctant to do things because we don’t want to do them alone. That is a big reason we end up in unhealthy relationships. We love the idea of being in love so much that we pick partners who are unhealthy just so we can get the drama associated with it.

We become drama junkies so that we don’t have to come to terms with the lonelinesss in our lives. But as I have said if we can be comfortable with ourselves we won’t compromise our standards and our values. I’m not encouraging being a loner…I love connection.

But don’t seek connection out of neediness. But seek it because that’s who you are. You are a person who loves to share with another who is open to receiving.

OLD WOUNDS

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

In a recent coaching conversation, my client reported to me that she was told by a healer that she sensed an old wound around her heart. Of course she wondered what she could do about it…thinking that there was something she could do to get rid of it. It doesn’t work that way.

I don’t think we totally heal from these wounds and it’s not important that we do. We all have emotional wounds of one sort or the other. They make us who we are. They give us a depth of character that we couldn’t experience without them. They give us soul…compassion and tap us into our humanity.

The healing journey from these wounds is a journey. And I think of a journey in a different context. There’s no ending. The journey is a process to be experienced fully. Yes it is a journey to wholeness that we experience everyday with more vitality and aliveness.

THE REAL GIFT OF THE HOLIDAYS

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

We are in the season. Who says it has to be stressful? Yes there is a lot of hype about the stress of the holiday season, but it doesn’t have to be that way unless you buy into it.

You don’t have to say “yes” to everything that comes your way. You have an opportunity to say “yes” to yourself and “no” to the distractions that take you off course.

In fact this is a good practice to implement as a way of life. Whenever you say “yes” to working longer and harder you take time away from discovering what is really important to you.

Once you know what that is, you can live a life with purpose and meaning. Then you feel the passion. So make the gift of the holidays a gift to yourself; that gift being that you live an inspired life. Then you have more to give others. And isn’t that what its all about? Touching and giving to others. The holidays remind us to do that but we can do that in a more conscious way. I have a suggestion for you and perhaps I have mentioned it before. Pick up the phone and say hello to a few people with whom you haven’t spoken with in the last few years.
