This trip is coming to an end. My time on Kauai has elevated my spirits. I committed to yoga 5 days per week and my body feels totally different. I have been getting incredible feedback from many strangers…and it’s the spiritual and physical workout of the yoga practice that I believe is making the difference. I feel a strong presence.
So here I am with all of the incentive to keep the practice alive when I return to Marin.
The challenge is to build on it and make it happen. It’s the committed daily practice of any discipline that makes a difference in one’s life. It’s taking it one day at a time. I feel that this is the path….so it’s up to me…And it is up to you…no one else….they can’t do the work for you..
Many of my clients that I coach, already know what to do…but they don’t do it…I know what to do and it’s up to me to do it. I don’t always do it But I keep at it. It’s at our fingertips.
It’s up to you to do it. So what are you committed to? Let me know.

I like the sound of the rooster crowing. I use to think that the crowing meant that it was morning. Every day I see roosters walking through my back yard on their way to their next destination. What I realize is that the crowing can be at 3 in the morning or at 3 in the evening. The rooster crows when he is ready to crow. And they have that walk…that strut. And they are colorful.
And in the morning I hear the birds singing their song. Some mornings they are lively and others you don’t even hear them. Right now I hear one chirping away. And then their is that dog with his occasional bark. Now I can hear all three. And those are the only sounds I am hearing. When it is quiet you can hear a lot. And when it is quiet you notice there is a lot going on that you usually don’t notice. Perhaps you notice that the silence has its own sound. Its own feel.
What’s clear to me is that many of us are afraid of the dark. It has its own emotional timbre. We associate alot with the darkness. We have many of these emotions since childhood. But sometimes we feel like the silence is like the dark. Hopefully you can look forward to the silence. No media, no phone, just you and your mind. It’s a great oportunity to assess what’s really going
on in your life. It takes practice. But it also is a gateway to greater personal freedom.

Have you ever looked at being with yourself as an art form? Llke most art forms, if we keep at it, we get better at it. After a while, we become an expression of that art form…For example…if we are a dancer, we move in a certain way and are more comfortable in our bodies. If we are meditators we are more comfortable with silence. And it goes on. The important thing to note is that as we become more comfortable with ourself the better decisions we make. This is especially so in the area of relationships. When we enjoy our own company we aren’t as needy and are more selective and usually able to avoid unhealthy relationships.
When we enjoy our own company we are more apt to be more adventurous. Sometimes we are reluctant to do things because we don’t want to do them alone. That is a big reason we end up in unhealthy relationships. We love the idea of being in love so much that we pick partners who are unhealthy just so we can get the drama associated with it.
We become drama junkies so that we don’t have to come to terms with the lonelinesss in our lives. But as I have said if we can be comfortable with ourselves we won’t compromise our standards and our values. I’m not encouraging being a loner…I love connection.
But don’t seek connection out of neediness. But seek it because that’s who you are. You are a person who loves to share with another who is open to receiving.

Can loosening your shoulders affect your state of mind? That’s what I am pondering. I have been a yoga student for many years now. On many occasions I feel like giving up and letting it all go. But something keeps me hooked. Perhaps it’s knowing that for the last few years I have had more aches and pains than usual…and I haven’t been as consistent with my yoga practice. Why not make a commitment to consistency so I can determine the overall effect it has on my entire well being.
And it’s still too early to tell. I do seem to have more mobiity. The bigger question is does it make you freer and happier? I believe it does. As your body moves freer you are more spontaneous in the way you move and in the way you respond to things. This obviously has been my path. The commitment to a long term practice. I have been commited to meditation for over 30 years. I don’t think about whether I want to do it…I just do it. The real value in anything is not on the surface; it’s only when you dive to the deeper levels of what’s possible. That’s when you connect with the source.
With whatever you are working on, you will experience many cycles but’s it’s in riding them out, that you will gain a new sense of freedom.
Ask yourself honestly, what’s in the way of your making a long term commitment?

I don’t know if you have been getting my newsletter, Letters on Life; if you have you know that I have been getting into DANCE…SALSA AND WEST COAST SWING for over a year now. I wasn’t aware of any classes on the island until last night. Here I was in a new setting with new people learning a few new things. I felt pretty comfortable. Obviously I can get a lot better…but I was satisfied with my ability to learn. Actually it was two classes back to back; first the salsa and then the swing.
The key to staying young is an attitude…it’s an attitude to always keep learning…The expression “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is misleading because what makes you old is your staying stuck…not willing to learn new things. Also to learn you have to have an openness to try new things…an openness to life. Being open to change…Embracing the change. By embracing change as a way of life, you can look forward to change as opportunity, as adventure, as possibility.

I decided to sleep in this morning and instead go to an late afternoon yoga class. My plan was to go for a morning swim at Hanalei Bay….but it was really raining and I didn’t feel like leaving the house until finally I just had to get out of the house. Later on my day would be full with coaching calls so this was my best chance to get out for a few hours. Just as it stopped raining I drove down to Hanalei Bay and parked my car.
When I looked up into the mountains I saw a series of incredible waterfalls in the distance. There was a road that had a sign that said private road and farm land. I couldn’t resist. I had to walk down that road. I walked a few yards to get a closer look at the waterfalls until I had walked approximately a quarter of a mile. The waterfalls were breathtaking. I watched for a while and then drove down to the beach and went for a swim.
The rain had an energy of its own. I know that many folks who visit the island complain about the rain…I love it…It cools things off..you get those magical rainbows and the luscious waterfalls… I was in awe this morning. On the other hand if it rains too much it can be destructive. There’s a balance when there is a perfect order. It’s always there for us to tune into…We just have to be open to it. There is intention and then release. It’s finding that edge that perfect balance.
As they say on the islands…No rain…No rainbows.

Troubles in paradise. I’m on this beautiful quiet island and in front of my house there are workers repaving the street. This is the second day of their adventure. Things seem to take longer over here. I can hear the trucks in front of my house. I haven’t left the house yet as once I leave I want to wait to after the sunset to return. It’s been almost a week without my family…So far I have made the adjustment nicely. I am working on my book…Witness to Life. I’ve much further along in the process and my original intent has changed.
That’s the way life is. We have one idea and in the process a new idea emerges…The first idea gets us in the door. We never know where it’s going to go. I remember the first time I heard about the Napali Coast, which is the coastline trail at the end of the road It was 30 years ago in Berkeley and I was visiting my good friend Ari. His roommate David just came back from hiking the 12 mile trail..I wanted to do it also and within a few weeks my girl friend and I were on the island. That was my first experience. Little did I know that eight years later, I would be living here 3 months a year. At the time I didn’t even know if I would ever come back. Well here I am. Life is a lot different now. Unless you take that first step you’ll stay stuck. Sometimes that’s all you know…the step that’s in front of you and then you take the next one. As Lao Tsu said many years ago: “A journey of a 1000 miles starts with that first step.”
