TAKING THE FIRST STEP
Troubles in paradise. I’m on this beautiful quiet island and in front of my house there are workers repaving the street. This is the second day of their adventure. Things seem to take longer over here. I can hear the trucks in front of my house. I haven’t left the house yet as once I leave I want to wait to after the sunset to return. It’s been almost a week without my family…So far I have made the adjustment nicely. I am working on my book…Witness to Life. I’ve much further along in the process and my original intent has changed.
That’s the way life is. We have one idea and in the process a new idea emerges…The first idea gets us in the door. We never know where it’s going to go. I remember the first time I heard about the Napali Coast, which is the coastline trail at the end of the road It was 30 years ago in Berkeley and I was visiting my good friend Ari. His roommate David just came back from hiking the 12 mile trail..I wanted to do it also and within a few weeks my girl friend and I were on the island. That was my first experience. Little did I know that eight years later, I would be living here 3 months a year. At the time I didn’t even know if I would ever come back. Well here I am. Life is a lot different now. Unless you take that first step you’ll stay stuck. Sometimes that’s all you know…the step that’s in front of you and then you take the next one. As Lao Tsu said many years ago: “A journey of a 1000 miles starts with that first step.”
