I DIDN’T WANT TO MISS OUT:
Every once in a while there comes along an event that you want to be part of. That’s the way I felt about this event. The Tour de Caliifornia, North America’s biggest cycling event in 100 years was a takeoff on the Tour de France the worlds most prestigious cycling event. Cyclists came from all over the world some of whom placed in the Tour.
Needless to say there was a lot of hype. I had been planning to experience this event for quite some time. I imagined the excitement as the cyclists anticipated the beginning of the race. For the last week there had been daily articles in the paper about the different cyclists. At the last minute a few obstacles were put in my path that could have easily sidetracked me but I persisted. I parked at the north end of Sausalito and walked toward the starting point. On the way there I reached a point where the cyclists would circle 3 times on their way out of town. I ran into a friend who was convinced this spot was the spot to be. Decision time!!
Should I stay there with my friend or keep going toward the starting point? The best vantage would be to stay there. But I continued on my way and arrived just in time as the Star Spangled Banner was being played over the loud speaker. And then there was the announcement of some of the local heroes one of whom finished in the top five at the Tour de France. The excitement was building with music playing in the background that was perfect for a race. Everything was orchestrated and there was no jockeying for position and as the cyclists began the event they stayed in perfect place.
And then I hurried toward the main corridor and was able to see them circle a few times before they were on their way. Within a few minutes they were gone and the strategizing began. I am eager to read the pager about the event. I felt that I was part of a momentous event much greater than myself. It’s a great feeling when you are connected to something greater than yourself.
