FIVE STRATEGIES FOR CHANGING YOUR ATTITUDE

Friday, June 8th, 2007

Attitude determines everything but how do you change it? You’re in a bad mood and don’t feel like doing anything. How do you get out of your funk? Here are some ideas that help me from time to time.

#1 I always look at my diet. Usually sugar and caffeine are the culprits. #2 Usually when I get in one of those moods I’m not exercising. Those are the obvious. #3 Then I ask myself empowering questions. Let’s say it’s an event that I don’t want to go to. I might ask myself the following question: I wonder who I’m going to meet or I wonder what the highlight of the evening will be. There is a good discussion of this on the website in the article…. Start your Day on your Terms.

#4 At least once per year I’ll fast and do the Stanley Burroughs master cleanse. This definitely changes my mood and gets me feeling great. The first few days are a struggle but as you progress you will feel great. #5 Music is a great mood changer. Almost instantly it gets me going…it’s hard to be down when you’re dancing. These are just a few of the things that have worked for me in the past. Hopefully I keep learning.

You’re Where You Need To Be

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

No matter what I have been doing in the world I have always been a seeker. Along the way I have read many books and taken many workshops and had many mentors. Now I make my living teaching what I have learned from all my wanderings and I am always learning more. I enjoy the process and realize that there is no place to get to. There’s no place I need to be.

There is nothing else than the present moment. I also realize the importance of making changes and of having a dream. You might think that this takes you away from living in the present. It can. But having the dream is what keeps you going…something you can look forward to. Having a vision of what you want in your life gives you something to strive for and to get excited about.

I am excited about this journey. I look forward to each day. It’s never too late to discover or rediscover your dream. Remember today is the first day of the rest of your life.

CLOTHES AS ART

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Summer is just about here…officially it’s not for a few more weeks. I’m waiting for the plums to get ripe so I can eat them…some of them are already falling to the ground. I better eat them before the animals get to them. The birds and squirrels have been feeling at home in the trees. I guess it’s time to pack and put away my jackets and heavy sweaters until next fall.

I love the change of seasons….taking out some of my seasonal clothes and putting them away for awhile. Putting on some old friends…Do these clothes still suit me?…Are they still me? What about your thinking. Are there some old limiting beliefs that no longer suit you?

Some of my favorites I keep for ever until they basically have a kazillion holes. I hate to let them go…but I realize I’m stopping the flow….of new textures… concepts to enter my consciousness. Our clothes can be art.. a way of expressing ourselves.

For the next week or so think of what clothes you wear and how they make you feel. See if consciously you can change your mood by changing the clothes you wear.

MAKING THE COMMITMENT

Sunday, June 3rd, 2007

With almost everything that we do we are faced with that moment when we don’t want to go any further. We’ve reached our edge. Even though there is a part of us that wants to go forward, there is that other voice that’s for giving up…rationalizing that it’s good enough. How do you get past this point?

In some ways you have reached a plateau. Your learning curve has flattened. It’s no longer exciting…the bloom is off. You don’t think you can take in any more information. How can you break through? That’s what I’m experiencing right now in yoga which serves as a model in many other things that I do. I’m at that place when I am really challenged and feel like giving up…but I keep going because I know when I’m done I’m going to feel different about myself. i break it down to smaller chunks of time. What keeps me going is the commitment that I made….to myself to finish the class to do the asanas. Make a commitment for a limited period of time. For example let’s say that it’s taking a break from coffee. Rather than saying I’ve quit drinking coffee and in a few weeks drink it again…..instead say “that I’m quitting for two weeks”… At the end of this time you can reconsider to renew or not your commitment.

When making commitments, set it up so you can succeed. Making the commitment for a limited time period is the best strategy initially. It creates momentum and gives you an opportunity to continually achieve small successes which over time make a dramatic shift in your life. At some point you become the change!
