THE STARFISH
Sometimes we wonder if our actions matter, i.e. we are just a pebble in a vast ocean. Voting seems that way at times. There are millions voting…what difference does it make. Recycling is another one. Does it matter if I recycle because there is so much disregard for the environment in other parts of the world. One of the dilemmas that most people face is the belief that their voice doesn’t matter..that in the big picture what they do doesn’t make a difference.
In the big picture everything we do and believe does make a difference. There is a story that makes this point.
There was a boy walking along the beach and he noticed thousands of starfish washed up on the shore….perhaps millions. He started throwing the starfish one at a time back into the water. And along came a woman who said to him…”why are you throwing the starfish back into the water. There are so many ashore that what you are doing won’t make a difference.” He picked up the next starfish and threw it back into the water…And said “it makes a difference to this one.” And with each starfish he picked up he said it makes a difference to this one and to this one.
We make a difference with each action we take even if it seems trivial…So yes make your contribution…Be engaged…..
