MAKING THE COMMITMENT
With almost everything that we do we are faced with that moment when we don’t want to go any further. We’ve reached our edge. Even though there is a part of us that wants to go forward, there is that other voice that’s for giving up…rationalizing that it’s good enough. How do you get past this point?
In some ways you have reached a plateau. Your learning curve has flattened. It’s no longer exciting…the bloom is off. You don’t think you can take in any more information. How can you break through? That’s what I’m experiencing right now in yoga which serves as a model in many other things that I do. I’m at that place when I am really challenged and feel like giving up…but I keep going because I know when I’m done I’m going to feel different about myself. i break it down to smaller chunks of time. What keeps me going is the commitment that I made….to myself to finish the class to do the asanas. Make a commitment for a limited period of time. For example let’s say that it’s taking a break from coffee. Rather than saying I’ve quit drinking coffee and in a few weeks drink it again…..instead say “that I’m quitting for two weeks”… At the end of this time you can reconsider to renew or not your commitment.
When making commitments, set it up so you can succeed. Making the commitment for a limited time period is the best strategy initially. It creates momentum and gives you an opportunity to continually achieve small successes which over time make a dramatic shift in your life. At some point you become the change!
