ARE YOU SELLING YOURSELF SHORT?

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Are you selling yourself short? Have you given up on that big dream you once had? Have you talked yourself out of it? Like many others have you rationalized that it just isn’t in the cards…so you move on forgetting what once excited you..what once captured your imagination.

Is it too late? Is it ever too late? I don’t know the answer but I know that it is possible…whether it’s probable is another question. We are not here to predict the future so probablilities are not important. What is important is having a fulfilling life, one full of hope and optimism. Thinking about possibility gives us that enthusiasm…that spark of hope that keeps us going…that puts a smile on our face. What’s possible in your life?

Dare to Dream…Tell a friend what your big dream is! That starts to make it real.

LEAVING WORK EARLY

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

What is leaving work early? Is it a state of mind. What if you’re there physically but not mentally. If you don’t stay at work as late as you normally do is that leaving early? I just finished writing the life balance ecourse and it’s posted on the site. Writing it forced me to articulate a philosophy for living that I have believed all my life. It’s really about reclaiming your life. The first key is to identify the ways in which your life is out of balance. Does working consume all your time or does some addiction..i.e. the computer, drugs of some form, television…. Where are you wasting your time? How can you be more productive? What are you afraid of? If you did not make yourself so busy what would you have to face?

The most common scenario is that people work longer than they have to because they feel at some level they don’t have any other choice. Ask yourself what would happen if you stopped working a half hour earlier every day. Could you still get it all done? I bet you could.

BE WILLING TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP:

Monday, May 28th, 2007

Have you heard the expression “if you don’t use it you lose it”..I have felt that on many occasions especially when I haven’t been doing one of my practices. It’s that feeling when you exercise for the first time in a month. You know you need to do it but it’s not fun. That’s the way learning new things is. At first it’s awkward and difficult. But gradually it starts to feel better. You’re glad you’re having a new conversation. Relationships are much the same way. There is always room for a new conversation and an opportunity to learn something new about yourself.

How satisfied are you with the quality of your relationships? What can you do to make them better? When’s the last time you have made a new friend? Real communication is an art form that is alway expanding and always full of new possibilities.

Here is a focus for the next week. Think about a person with whom you would want to transform the quality of your communication. What would have to shift? What would you have to do to make it happen? What’s in the way of you doing what you have to do? And yes it usually starts with you. You have to make the first step. Be willing to put yourself out there. Perhaps make that phone call you have been putting off. Or send an email you have been delaying.

ON BEING PRODUCTIVE

Friday, May 25th, 2007

I like to feel productive…Sometimes I just don’t take time to do the work..but eventually I’ll get to it… I am in the process of writing my book that is about my life, Witness to Life….it feels good to have a project to make progress on it…it’s been over a year now since I’ve been working on it.

I actually started last spring…and thought by the end of the summer I would be done…it didn’t work out that way…I only wrote anther 10 pages and kind of got bored with the project. Then I revisited what I was doing and went in another direction. I changed the subject form Stepping Stones to Greater Personal Freedom to Witness to Life. That got me going again. I’m telling my life story…everyday I tell a little more. It’s endless because I have a lot of stories to tell, all leading to where i am now. When we look at our life journey, it’s amazing how interconnected everything is and how it all seems to seemlessly fit in place.

Take some time for reflection and see the synchronicity in your life.

THE ENERGY IN THE AIR

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

I can feel the momentum. Last nite I had to get out and take a walk. It was so nice I couldn’t resist. I got up at 6:00 this morning and did my yoga and then went to the gym. It’s so much easier with it being lighter early. I’m definitley feeling in the productive mode but I have to admit it’s a constant battle to be productive and with this weather. Even though I want to go to the, I easily get sidetracked.

My mind is active and stimulated and I’m noticing the wildlife and the flowers. I’m smelling the Jasmine that seems to be all around…There were a bunch of crows nesting on one of the nearby trees. For a few minutes they were making their sounds and then it was quiet. Nature is awakening from its sleep. You can feel the energy in the air. I’m smiling. I feel like moving.

NOW IS THE TIME

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

What’s your favorite time of year? Mine is the season of NOW! Right now I am feeling spring…it’s in full bloom…It’s warmer, although not too warm. There are blossoms on the fruit trees although less and less being replaced by buds that will soon be fruit and a few remaining wild flowers. I feel more active….like I want ride my bike in the hills. Yeah it’s that time of year. Getting up much earlier…days are longer. Yeah….can do things outdoors in the evenings…IT’S NOW TIME.

Motivation…excitement…adventure. It’s sure good to feel this way. How can I build on it? As I said it’s never too late to do what you really want. It’s never too late to think about what your vision is for your life and for your community. What is it that you don’t tell people you really want because you think they will think you are crazy? It’s time to put yourself out there. Now is the time. What do you really want but because you don’t want to be disappointed you put it on the back burner.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE: Sometimes I think if I only kept at it. It could be any one of several things. If I kept at the Clarinet or Saxophone…If I kept playing tennis and I could go on and I am sure you can too. Welcome back. It’s not too late. Perhaps you have to cover some old ground and repeat some of the lessons over but so be it. It won’t take you too long to get back into the groove and then you go to the next level. I got out of the habit and forgot why I did it in the first place. So the question is how do you get back in the groove.

You just do it and develop a new habit. How long does it take to develop new habits? According to experts at least 30 days of repeating the same habit or thought to make it a new pattern. Usually we are impatient and don’t give it a chance or when we get off the wagon like I did, we develop the belief that it’s too late and that you can’t go back.

It’s never too late to try what we use to do in a new way. What are your beliefs that limit your ability to give it another whirl? What is in the way of your recommitting? Take the first step and then the second and with each new step you build some momentum.

I DON’T THINK WE ARE COMMUNICATING

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

Has anyone said to you…we’re not communicating..Or should I ask…when was the last time someone said that…When we say we aren’t communicating we usually mean that we are not in agreement…or that we have a difference of opinion about how something should be done.

Communication is much deeper and broader than just agreeing. It involves tuning into the other person. As this occurs we learn to sense what is going on with the other person and better able to develop our nonverbal communication skills. We notice body language, facial expressions and the energy we feel when we are in the presence of certain people.

Being an effective communicator is a desire most of us have. It’s having the ability to make a connection with another. It’s the ability to touch another’s soul and to feel like you know who they are. We’ll followup with this topic in future blogs.

ARE YOU REALLY LISTENING?

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Do you always have to know what you are going to say before you speak? Probably not but if you are like most people you don’t want to sound stupid and so you overanalyze how you respond to what’s being said.

But can you really listen if you’re thinking about how to respond? You can’t and yet that is what we all do…Our mind wanders and the next thing we know we’re thinking about an incident in the past or about something that might happen in the future.

How do we break this habit? It’s difficult but notice when this occurs. You might repeat silently to yourself what is being said…that will force you to be present. Put yourself in the other persons shoes. Instead of thinking about yourself and what comes to mind, imagine what its like for the other person. Consider who they are and what there capabilities are. What’s behind their words. Become a listener rather than a talker.

BEING OUT OF THE GROOVE

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Usually when the new year begins you are full of commitments and determination and have momentum starting the year….but as the year progresses you start to lose that sense of commitment and the momentum becomes just a trickle.

What do you do when you are out of the GROOVE? What I mean by out of the loop is when you lose that connection to your commitment. You lose the flow…I had a flow of going to the gym and then I lost it…the groove.

But I have a great rationalization because I am working out with yoga, tennis and mountain biking…good things but not like going to the gym….but when you have to justify something it’s like trying to explain a lie…Not always an easy thing to do…probably never a good position to be in…So how do you recommit so you don’t totally abandon what you were doing?

I think you need to have an honest discussion with yourself rather than think you are still in alignment with your original commitment because if you don’t you will feel at some level you are out of integrity…Start over and rather than renew your commitment make a smaller commitment one in which you can keep and be successful. Perhaps your commitment is no longer appropriate. Try this on for size. See what happens…
