THE WISHING WELL

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

I am listening to Richie Havens singing his song The Well about a wishing well near the hollow. The well is full of water and when you look into it you see your reflection. The well is your mirror for what you see in your life. If you’re feeling fear the mirror reflects fear and if you feel love that is what the well is going to reflect. Isn’t that the way it is, we see what we project. We see what we believe and want to believe.

The mystics and many of the modern day thinkers espouse we attract what we focus on. I believe it and it has been a practice of mine to focus on what can go right rather than what can go wrong. It’s more fun and the likelihood is that there is a greater chance that it will happen. So that brings me to this time of year. It’s spring…it’s time to plant our seeds for the upcoming year. Metaphorically our seeds are our ideas; our ideas that we want to grow and blossom.

What is it that you want to happen on a personal level, a community level and globally? I think that we would all like to see world peace. Have you seen those bumper stickers that say “Visualize World Peace”. Lets all look into our wishing well and see the world a better place.

WHAT’S YOUR KEY

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

I’m thinking about passwords today. I have between 10-15 . If I add combinations to locks that I have for bicycles and other things I approach around 20. I don’t want to write them down because then the safety element would be lost. So I memorize them and give myself clues as to the best way to remember them.

And aren’t passwords and combinations replacements for old fashioned keys. They are suppose to be more efficient but instead you have more to keep track of…. what happened to those good ole days when life was less complicated….to those simple days when you didn’t have to hide what’s yours…passwords do let you in and are the key to unlocking secrets .

Wouldn’t it be cool if every one had a password and if we knew what it was that person would instantly be more open, loving and there for us. The ultimate password is the password to the heart. And just like our many other passwords, sometimes we need to look harder to find what it is… But once we find it everything clicks…we’re where we want to be…we’re home.

WHEN IN DOUBT SMILE

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

So where do I start…I’m experimenting. A friend of mine suggested that I listen to the soundtrack of “What a Girl Wants”…haven’t seen the movie so I’m curious to see what comes up with this writing… the words let’s fall in love are repeated. I remember the Beattles song “Love Makes the World Go Round”….it sure puts a smile on your face.

There’s an article that my wife,Annie, gave me on the benefits of smiling. This is what I know for sure. It’s a good thing and we need to spend more time doing it. It’s interesting how I said spend like it’s money or a commodity. You won’t run out. And the more you do it, the more you will get back in return. Have you ever looked into a mirror and smiled. It’s fun…if you haven’t done this yet do it and if you have what happens when you look into that mirror?

What do you feel like doing? Now the music is kicking in and I feel like moving.. like dancing with a smile on my face. Now a big smile….According to scientists when you smile the muscles stimulate nerve endings in the brain connected to the feeling good center. There’s a release of endorphins and nitrous oxide. My message to you is to be a smiler. When in doubt, smile. Try the mirror experiment. What if you start with just one minute looking in the mirror and smiling. Who is that person behind that smile.

That was fun.. I’m smiling…and becoming a bigger smiler.

REMOVING THE BARRIERS

Monday, March 26th, 2007

There’s a shift when doing something stops being a struggle and becomes something you’re looking forward too….it becomes part of your life. You need to do it to feel that you are you and totally you. All the parts of your self are alive at the same time. You are integrated and feel and act in a positive way. It might be going to the gym…expressing yourself creatively…or walking on the beach.

From this place you are willing to take on new things with the confidence that you can do almost anything. The question that we would all like to figure out is how can we stay in that groove and how can we bring it back? Most people that I speak with have experienced that groove before but their challenge is to get it back and to feel it again. It’s also that feeling when you feel you can do almost anything? What’s the secret?

There are universal principles that are not so obvious to many people but when you look beneath the surface you know them. The ancient Chinese think in terms of energy. When our chi or energy is stuck then we have disease and uneasiness. We need to keep our energy flowing. Unlock the blocks…remove the obstacles….what are the obstacles in your life? What thoughts and beliefs are holding you back? Clear the blocks from your mind and see what unfolds….limitless…expanding…..mindblowing. Let it flow..What’s one thing you can begin today?

THE POWER OF RITUAL

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

I’m thinking about rituals and how they can benefit us. I recently read in the Power of Full Engagement by Tony Schwartz an expanded definition of what a ritual is. Our everyday life is full of rituals that we don’t necessarily think of in this way. Rituals are more than just habits in that a ritual has the potential to be symbolic of something greater that just a physical act.

For example if I get up and make myself fresh juice, the making of the juice is part of my healthy living ritual. Exercising rather than being a habit can also become part of my healthy living ritual. Because it is elevated to being a ritual it reverberates througout my entire being. It sends a message that health is a value, a priority in my life which has much greater value that just the juice itself.

When looking at an ordinary habit in the context of a ritual rather than something we have to do we feel empowered….the challenge and the opportunity is to look at our live from the perspective of ritual. There will be less resistance and more excitement. Become an explorer and join with me in this quest to make ordinary living more adventurous.

CREATING YOUR MOVIE

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

I was just talking with a friend about the roles and identities we play in our lives. I have been thinking about what it would be like to create a movie about where we are at in our lives currently.

What would be the role you would play. What is your identity? Right now I am playing coach-mentor, father, husband, and renaissance man. I have played lawyer, musician, athlete and poet at different times of my life. Right now I am embracing this role as a renaissance man….it all makes sense for me and it’s fun.

It enables me to live a balanced integrated life and incorporate all of my past experiences and beliefs into being in integrity with who I really am. It’s a matter of throwing off the shackles which have confined me, which usually are the past judgments of others and of ourselves.

So here’s the challenge. If you threw off all of those past shackles and all of the shoulds and woulds, what would your movie be like? Who would be playing the main character and what role would you be playing? Until next time.

CHANGING OUR VIEWPOINT

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Those beautiful mountains… i’s been raining and I just got back from a mountain bike ride. The streams were flowing and the ground was soft….the mountain was beautiful. I was away at a coaching conference and missed riding. You never forget how to ride a bike but you forget other things if you don’t make them a habit and make them part of your lifestyle.

On the plane coming back I was looking down on the mountains and noticed how other worldly they seemed. I was reminded of a visionary painting and in that moment felt the majesty of the universe.

When we change our viewpoint or attitude the world looks and seems different to us. Imagine having the ability as your day progresses to change your perspective and look at life from this higher plane. My conversation on the plane reflected that perspective. I sat next to a young man who just published his first book of poetry and was excited about experiencing the mysteries of life. He will definitely journeyon.

THE SECRET LIFE OF SECRETS

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

When you have an online presence, it’s easy to track what you say. All one has to do is to make a search and there is most everything you have ever said. It’s different than just having a conversation. I have joked with a few friends who have wanted me to keep their secret. They would ask “you’re not going to tell anyone?” And I would say, “Don’t worry, I’ll just post it on the internet.” I feel a little bit like that knowing that whatever I say will be read down the road by many folks. And that is especially so with my ezine, Letters on Life, since it’s read by over 2000 people.

What about secrets? Does having secrets really serve us? How much do we tell the other person…our friends, our loved ones, our coworkers….where do we draw the line? How about a title for a book…”The Secret life of Secrets”… And when does a secret become a withhold, so that by not communicating your thoughts, the way you feel about the other person is affected. This usually happens when there’s something bugging you about the other person that you don’t tell them. Over time your withholding these feelings develops into negative feelings about the other person and you find yourself overreacting to what they do and say.

Sometimes sharing your secret is nothing more than expressing your loving feelings to another person. That’s another way we withhold. Think of some of your relationships and the opportunity for greater connection. I know that expanding my ability to share what’s on my mind will give me more intimacy in all of my relationships. Think of a few people in your life with whom you could express some loving feelings. When might you express those feelings?

ENERGY DRAINERS

Friday, March 16th, 2007

What’s on your list? #1 for me was changing my message on my answering machine. I have had the same message for two years….just saying that makes me feel like a dinasaur….stuck..resistant to change…and I’m not. I have thought about changing my message on at least 100 occasions. It’s amazing the amount of time that went to just thinking about it. And what’s also amazing are the spectrum of emotions that i felt and the reasons I came up with not doing anything.

I was feeling anxious before making this change and this is from a person who is used to making significant decisions. Did you notice I did say “was”? I just made the change and with playing it back 4 times the whole process took under four minutes. It seemed so easy and now I am thinking about making this change at least at the beginning of every month. Just think about other areas of your life in which you are reluctant to change. We can be stubborn sometimes, can’t we? But our resistance to change is what holds us back from having a successful and fulfilling life. Life is full of changes…just think of the seasons of the year. We either create the change in our life or we react to it. I know what I want to do and I am sure your preference would be to create the change you want.

Sometimes we just have to say we are going to do it. Having someone hold us accountable is a big help. Having goals also propels us in the direction that we want to go. More about that next time.

What is one change that you can make today? Who is going to hold you accountable?

Let me know

CREATING THAT SPACE INSIDE

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

Good morning ..It’s spring. The fruit trees are blossoming and the birds are feeding on the trees. The warm weather is here and the days are longer.

I look at my surroundings. You see lots of vegetation…oak trees…fruit trees..rose bushes and more…some starting to bud. There’s also a lot of wildlife… Squirrels, raccoons, deer, birds and of course the chickens.

We’ve had these chickens for about a year now and I remember how cute they were when we first got them but they needed protection. Our dog was jealous and the raccoons were nearby. We built a chicken coop and put a kennel inside. At nightime the chickens perch on our bicycles that are hanging vertically and we carry them to the coop. And then in the morning we let them out and they usually run over to a corner of the property and hide from us.

It is during this time they lay their eggs in their nest. If we remove most or all of the eggs from the nest they will not return and will look for a new one. Writing these last two sentences triggered for me on a primal level what a nest egg really is. It is a place inside of us in which we feel safe to give of our essence. What can we do to create this in our lives. How can we create an environment in which we feel safe to fully express ourselves? Imagine creating your spirtual nest.
