CLOTHES AS ART: Fall is here...today is the first day since I have been back in Marin that I have had to wear long sleeves.....the leaves are falling and there is a crispness in the air. I was looking forward to this change in climate...but forgot how nippy in the morning it gets. So now I am cold. And I know that by the time the winter is over I will be looking forward to the spring.

I love the change of seasons....taking out some of my seasonal clothes and putting them away for awhile. Putting on some old friends...Do these clothes still suit me?...Are they still me? Or like some people including myself do I keep something for ever until it basically has a kazillion holes. I've done that many times...but I realize I'm stopping the flow....of new textures... concepts to enter my consciousness. Our clothes can be art.. a way of expressing ourselves.

For the next week or so think of what clothes you wear and how they make you feel. And see if consciously you can change your mood by changing the clothes you wear.

THE MAJESTY: I was looking forward to driving to Hanalei for an early morning Yoga class as I have totally embraced taking my practice to the next level. I feel inspired. And then it started raining, the kind of tropical rain that is warm, heavy and quickly over.

I waited for it to stop and started driving. As I started down the hill toward the Hanalei river, I noticed or should I say was awestruck by the most incredible RAINBOW that I have ever seen. The colors were vivid, vibrant and spectacular.. These moments can be rare but on Kauai quite common.

I was elevated as I arrived at the class. The class just added to the sense of awe. As I was walking to my car when the class was over I was again struck by the waterfalls cascading down the mountains. So that's how it is in paradise. I'm going back to Marin on Friday. I'm missing the family and it's time.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN: I just got off the phone with a friend of mine in the bay area and I don't know why but I started thinking about the helicopters on Kauai.

A number of years ago I decided to take a helicoptor ride and always looking for the good deal I decided to book the longer trip. The helicopter headed toward the mountains of Kauai...As the coptor went toward the mountain there was always that anxiety as to whether the coptor would clear the mountain..And it would and there would be another ridge to clear. But before clearing this ridge we were not able to see what was on the other side. It seemed that there were always new heights to climb..And in the beginning I had no idea how high we could climb.

And so it is with life...Wd don't always know what is possible in the beginning..And we won't know until we start the journey. And many times the heights we do reach far exceed what we thought was possible. Begin the journey and enjoy it. But nothing is going to happen if you remain on the sidelines.

NAMES AND EXPRESSIONS: I love the names computers use for all their commands.
For example Create a Post is what I press when I want to create a new blog. Boot up means to turn it on. What about the language of teens. Kick it replaces hang out. Chill replaces being cool. But what replaces being in the groove. And is there a magic way to get in the groove...you know the flow of life. Runners sometimes get that runners high when those endorphins kick in. So now we have kick it and kick in. I like to think of "kick in" as that effortless flow in my life. Meditation, music, writing and tennis are just a few of the things that give me that feeling. How often are you creating that effortless flow in your life? What barriers are in the way?

The August version of Letters on Life is ready to go. You should be getting it in a few days.

THE WRITING GROOVE: I'm listening to Eric Clapton's Pilgrim album and it's so much easier to get into a writing groove when I'm listening to some good music. My son Josh, got here last night and it was good to see him. It's been a while. Our whole family is here and right now they are down at Hanalei. I haven't read a paper in over a month or watched the news. I do have access to being online so it's not like I don't know what's going on. I do check my favorite websites.

It's amazing how adaptable we are. When we let go of our habits we have a new sense of freedom. I'm thinking of other habits that I have...those things you need to do to get through the day. Here's a challenge for you. Identify three habits you have and break at least one of them for the next week. I have another challenge for you. Brush your teeth with your other hand.

MY BIRTHDAY PARTY-- BREAKING WITH TRADITION:I always have a birthday party on the evening of my birthday at Anini Beach. It's kind of a tradition. And this year that was our plan..but the weather did not cooperate. We kept thinking we might have to change the party and until the last minute I resisted but finally changed the location to our house, and made a few phone calls to let everyone know of the change. For a while I kept wondering if it was going to clear even though we already implemented the change.I wanted validation that I made the right decision...Finally I let it go.

So we had a different experience...the party started late and ended later. We were much more comfortable and got to talk with every one more because we were physically closer together. It was also a nice environment for the music and we didn't have to worry about the rain ruining our instruments. We played some great music.

It was definitely a more intimate experience and afterwords it felt real special. Now I'm thinking that next year this is going to be my preference and perhaps the new tradition. Once you break the pattern it's a lot easier to keep making changes. I'm wondering what's on the other side of other habits in my life. In what ways are you locked into habits in your life?

THE POWER OF Film...For the second time in three days I viewed "What the Bleep" a film looking at human consciousness and how our thoughts influence and create our reality. Could it be so simple as positive thinking? i.e.if you want to have a good life then think positively about the life you want.

In the film there was a section on Masaru Emoto's work using the electron microscope to visualize how thought influences water molecules. Just by thought the beauty and healing properties of the water molecules would change. So if thought could change the structure of water molecules could thought also change us and the way we perceive our reality. When we consider that our bodies are 90% water it makes total sense.

The film also recognized that the camera lens actually sees more than the human eye because it is not limited by beliefs and attitudes. We only see what we want to see and disregard what doesn't makes sense to our belief system. I might even see the film again. Got to go now down to Hanalei

WELL HELLO AGAIN: I'm getting in the routine of being on the island. Yesterday I went to the river and in the evening played some great music with my friends Bill and Dave...Makaela sat in at Sushi and Blues.....I also saw a thought provoking movie: " What the Bleep".

It takes what is today common metaphysical thought and makes this thinking visual...The basic premise, that our thoughts create our reality, is seen on the screen with visual representations of experiments with water among other things.

One of the other concepts is that just by becoming conscious of our habitual patterns is enough to interrupt our negative entrenced neuropathways that keep us on automatic pilot. By becoming the observer we interrupt that habitual negative pattern.

This is a very inspiring film about possibility. As we think we create... A lot of great thinkers have been espousing this for years. James Allen, Napoleon Hill. It all relates to our attitute...If you haven't signed up for my newsletter I invite you to do so. I think it can be a great support for you on this journey. Usually when I am on Kauai I don't write a monthly newsletter but the film has inspired me and I was excited to know there is a film about the principles that I write about in Letters on Life.

MY FAVORITE RIVER: Late in the day I drove down to my favorite river and sat for a while in the shade. I looked across the river to the ocean and watched its inviting waves compel me to swim across and walk along the hot sand of the beach.

I saw my friend Tara who is also one of the yoga teachers at Yoga Hanalei. We talked for a while and then I continued along the beach and returned to the river. I then swam back across to the other side and waited until I dried off. Then I backed out of the bumpy road and headed up to the highway. What a great place.

When I got back to the house I was the only one home and was able to play my favorite bamboo flute and watch the magical sunset..The sunsets here are beautiful....There are just enough clouds to texture the sky when the sun sets. I also saw my first double rainbow of the trip.

INNER REFLECTIONS: Last night I went over to my friend Bill's and played music with Bill and his friend David. I haven't played for a while but it didn't take long to get the groove back. I was also updated on the latest in the island music scene.

This morning I took an early swim at Hanalei Bay to start the day. And now I'm just hanging in the house until later when I take my youngest to a class. I have been thinking alot how our whole lives are just a reflection of our inner state.

Before I left I went to the dentist and as I'm leaning back getting my treatment I noticed on the ceiling a beautiful poster of a sunset and on the bottom there is a quote from Walden..."One can only experience beauty but with a serene mind." That is my challenge to recapture that inner stillness and bring it forth as I experience my everyday world.

How you can benefit from Coaching.

If you’re reading this letter it’s because you have an interest or curiosity about the phenomenon called coaching. Coaching is sweeping the nation, but why, what's it all about, and how does it work? A Coach is a well trained and experienced professional who helps you produce extraordinary results in your life. Coaches accelerate progress by providing focus and awareness. They help you see where you are now and what you are willing to do to get where you want to be in the future, recognizing that results are a matter of your intentions, choices and actions. The bottom line is a great Coach will help you get what you want, often more quickly than doing it alone.

Why Is Coaching important? So many of us are so busy living from our clocks and calendars, we often forget what matters to us or have little time to even think about it. Too often we are uncomfortable about saying what we want because we don’t believe that it is possible. Sometimes we have just given up. A masterful coach inspires you to believe in yourself so that you are willing to declare what it is that you really want.

A Coach "listens" intently, asks clarifying questions, challenges your assumptions, helps you dream big and makes sure you do the important things you say you will do in order to have the important things you say you want. It is a partnership based on intention, agreement, integrity and relationship. The bottom line is, we can't do it alone. Some of us think we can, but with a Coach you will be challenged, stretched and empowered and you will increase your chances of being successful and be celebrated for it.

In the process you discover your source of inner power, so that whatever you do in life you do with more confidence and ease.

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed  by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. Throw off the bow lines, sail away from the safe harbor, Catch the Trade Winds in your sails."
- Mark Twain

"Mark became my personal coach when I greatly questioned who I was going to be. As a single mother for the last 10 years I had one main focus, my children. Mark has helped me focus on myself, my mind and this ability has benefited me in many ways.  I am calmer and more confident as I explore my future options. After studying and working in a new field for the past three years, my income is finally on the rise. People see a confident woman today when they meet with me. I am a confident, calmer and healthier woman today. I believe in myself and my work. I know financial success will come."

"When I came to see you a little over a year ago, I had a general sense that my life was unfulfilled, but I didn't know why or what to do to change it. You helped me to see that my life was out of balance. We identified my priorities, and you gave me tools to create the life I wanted. But I couldn't have made the necessary changes without your ongoing guidance and support. With your help, I was able to purchase a home closer to my daughter's school, make huge steps toward fulfilling career goals, and find a more healthy and satisfying relationship."
Linda S. Naleway, Senior Paralegal

"As someone who had done lots of personal growth work with individuals like Deepak Chopra and Tony Robbins, I was a bit reserved about whether working with Mark would add anything to my life.  Now, nearly one year after first meeting Mark, I can say with 100% conviction that my work with Mark has been hands-down the most powerful personal growth work that I have done.  Through Mark's ongoing support, guidance and wisdom, I picked up my family and left my law firm to pursue a job that I've dreamt about my entire life.  And now, quite literally, I am living a dream come true and I simply would not be where I am today without Mark's coaching."
Don McLaughlin, Attorney-at-Law

"As with any true professional, he brings priceless and valuable intangibles to the table. Mark and I developed so much positive momentum together in the sessions that the waves of passion for my marketing projects keep on coming. He is a coach in the same manner as a gifted athletic coach or music teacher.  He brings out the talent within and helps us to play our own tunes effectively."
Steven R. Hutt, Financial Life Designer

"The most profound change I have noticed from working with you has been in my communication. For the first time, I am able to be more myself, open, honest and real with everyone-my life partner, my friends, with those I manage, and those who manage me. They, too, have noticed and applauded this transformation."
